Wedding Flower Prices: Why a Brochure Can’t Tell the Whole Story

A Whimsical Woodland Wedding at Harburn Barn

I have just spent the last two weeks agonising over my wedding brochure.

What should I add? What should I take out? Which photographs should I use? Should I include a full price guide, or just some sample pricing?

After much deliberation, I’ve finally decided that what I have is, in my opinion, a beautiful brochure, packed with helpful information, advice and inspiration.

But will it answer every question you have?

Will it allow you to work out exactly what your wedding flowers will cost before you’ve even spoken to me?

Probably not.

And there are a few very good reasons why.

Every wedding is different

Every couple has, quite rightly, different tastes, different priorities and a completely different vision for their wedding.

Some couples are all about roses, orchids and trailing amaranthus.

Others simply love gypsophila and carnations.

Some want an enormous, cascading bouquet overflowing with flowers, while others want just a few beautiful stems, tied with a lovely ribbon.

And that means the resulting price tags can be just as different as the bouquets themselves.

So when I put a price guide into my brochure, how do I decide what those prices should be?

The slightly unglamorous answer? The law of averages.

I look at a year's worth of wedding pricing and try to work out what represents a realistic starting point for each type of floral design.

But that's exactly what it is: a starting point.

It isn't a fixed price, and it isn't a promise of what your flowers will cost.

Because I could create two completely different bouquets, both described as a “bridal bouquet”, and the price difference between them could be significant.

And there is another problem with giving too much pricing information.

Prices can be misleading

Imagine you open my brochure and see that attendant bouquets start from £75.

If all you've ever wanted is a petite posy of gypsophila, you might think, “£75? That's more than I expected,” close the brochure and go looking elsewhere.

On the other hand, perhaps you're dreaming of a full-on, modern, structural bouquet made from premium blooms.

If you see a starting price of £50, you might think you've found a bargain.

Until you receive your personalised quote and discover that your particular bouquet is £100.

Neither scenario is particularly helpful.

The price guide is there to give you an indication, not to tell the whole story.

And if you look at the prices in my brochure and think, “That's more than I've budgeted for,” please don't automatically assume that means we can't work together.

Tell me what your budget is.

When I say I'm happy to work with your budget and help you get the flowers you're dreaming of, that doesn't mean my prices are negotiable. If I've quoted for a mixed bouquet of A, B and C, and that particular design is outside your budget, simply asking me to make it cheaper isn't going to miraculously change the cost of the flowers or the time involved in creating it.

What I can do is help you look at different options.

Perhaps we swap flower C for flower D. Perhaps we make the bouquet a little more streamlined. Perhaps we keep the bridal bouquet you've fallen in love with and make the attendants' flowers a little simpler.

There are often different ways of using your budget without losing the overall feeling you're trying to create.

I can't promise that every idea will work at every budget, but I can promise to be honest with you and, where I can, help you find ways to make your flowers work harder for you.

And then there's the question of seasonal flowers...

I generally quote using seasonal blooms that complement your colour palette and overall aesthetic, alongside any specific premium flowers you've requested.

But “seasonal” doesn't automatically mean “cheap”.

A flower being in season simply means it is naturally available at that particular time of year. It doesn't tell you what it costs.

Take peonies, for example. When they're in season, they're much more readily available and can be a wonderful choice for a summer wedding. But they're still a premium flower and can cost several times more than something like a carnation.

So swapping to seasonal flowers can be a sensible way of working with your budget, but it isn't a magic wand that makes all flowers inexpensive.

And this is exactly why having a conversation can be so much more useful than simply relying on a price list.

And then there are the photographs...

This was another thing I agonised over.

Do I keep the photographs soft, light and traditionally “weddingy”?

If I do, will couples wanting something more colourful, contemporary or unusual assume that isn't something I do?

But if I fill the brochure with bold colours, unusual flowers and more adventurous designs, will couples planning a classic, romantic wedding wonder whether I'm the right florist for them?

The truth is, I don't think there is a perfect answer.

I could fill the brochure with hundreds of photographs and still not show every possibility.

Because I don't work from a set collection of designs.

So, what can my brochure actually tell you?

It can tell you how I work.

It can give you an idea of my style, my experience and the level of service I offer.

It can give you useful advice about planning your wedding flowers and help you understand where your budget might be best spent.

It can give you examples of pricing and, hopefully, help you decide whether we might be a good fit.

But it can't tell you exactly what your flowers will look like or exactly what your wedding will cost.

And actually, I think that's a good thing.

Because your wedding shouldn't be a case of opening a brochure, finding a picture you like, checking the price and ordering the flowers.

Your flowers should be a reflection of you — your style, your plans, your venue, your priorities and your budget. They should be created around your wedding, rather than chosen from a catalogue.

That's why the conversation matters.

It's not about me

I'm very aware that I won't be the right florist for everyone.

And that's absolutely fine.

I have a personal style. After more than 30 years in floristry and hundreds of weddings, it would be strange if I didn't.

But my style is also quite fluid.

Because when it comes to wedding flowers, it's not really about me.

It's about the couple sitting in front of me.

It's about what you love.

What you don't love.

The way you want your wedding to feel.

The colours that make you happy. The flowers you've always dreamed of. The things you've seen and fallen in love with. And sometimes, the things you didn't even realise were possible.

My job is to take all of that and turn it into flowers that feel like you.

So, what is the brochure actually for?

In short, my brochure is there to introduce you to me.

It gives you a feel for who I am, how I work, the service I offer and, hopefully, a little glimpse into the kind of wedding flowers I create.

It also gives you the opportunity to dip your toes into wedding flower pricing and get a feel for what things might cost, without having to commit to anything.

But I don't expect a brochure to answer every question you might have.

That's where I come in.

If you'd like an initial idea of what your own wedding flowers might cost, I have a handy questionnaire you can complete. From the information you provide, I can put together an initial quote based on your plans, flowers and priorities.

Or, if you'd rather talk things through, I offer free, no-obligation consultations. We can chat in person, over video or on the phone – whichever feels easiest for you.

Because sometimes you just need to be able to ask questions.

Could we do this?
What would you suggest instead?
Would it be better to spend the budget here or there?
How could we make this work?

And those are the things a brochure simply can't answer.

So, while I've spent the last two weeks agonising over every word, photograph and price in my new brochure, I've also reminded myself that it doesn't need to tell the whole story.

It just needs to start the conversation.

We'll take care of the rest together.

I was absolutely delighted with my wedding bouquets Susan made for our wedding. They were exactly what I had in mind and looked so beautiful on the day. I also had a small picture of my dad which I gave her to put in my flowers which she did perfectly. I cannot recommend Susan highly enough. Karen

We were delighted with our wedding flowers from Narcissus Wedding Flowers. Susan nailed the brief keeping things understated with venue flowers in jars which were repurposed from the ceremony to the reception and then gifted to guests at the end of the day. The bridal bouquet was stunning and adding the personal touch of my charm with our mums’ photos to the flowers made our day. Lynda

We are absolutely thrilled with the stunning wedding flowers Susan created for us. Planning our Scottish wedding from overseas, all our communication was done via Zoom and email, and it couldn’t have gone more smoothly. Susan was incredibly accommodating, offering plenty of ideas and suggestions within our budget. Highly recommend her services! Jassie

Susan was incredibly kind, helpful and knowledgable and her flowers were just perfect for our wedding. She gave great advice on what was seasonal and would work with our colour scheme, and incorporated our tartan into bouquets and buttonholes. Cannot recommend her enough. Leanne

Absolutely stunning flowers created by Susan for our wedding. I opted for bright pinks and deep red/purple jewel tone flowers which were complimented nicely with some foliage. The flowers were stunning and really complimented the teal dresses worn by my bridesmaids. So glad I went for a colourful bouquet, and the flowers still looked fantastic days after. Highly recommended! Karina

“I just wanted to say thank you so, so much for my wedding flowers- they were absolutely amazing.  I don’t know how you did it based on my pretty poor description of the kind of thing I was looking for (sorry!), but you made my perfect bouquets! I loved them and so many people complimented.” Stephanie

“The flowers were beautiful, exactly what I was after. Thank you for making it all look so pretty!” Kerry and Mike

“I didn’t really know what I wanted, I had vague ideas about colours and that I wanted some greenery in my bouquet and that was about it. I largely left the selection of the flowers to Susan and the displays she created for us were just breath-taking, from the table flowers and candelabra centrepieces to my bouquet to buttonholes, everything was absolutely perfect.  Martha

Susan has an insightful understanding and wonderful taste when it comes to flowers; whether you know exactly what you want or have absolutely no clue you won’t be disappointed.” Nicky

“The flowers supplied for our wedding were  gorgeous. We especially loved the aisle set up and the flower arch. Made our wedding look elegant. Susan was amazing from start to finish. Highly recommend her for couples looking for wedding flowers, Sue and Alfie

“I wanted my flowers to be designed to look like my Great Granny Annie’s wedding flowers, so I gave Susan a photo to use as inspiration. What Susan created was so perfect! With peonies and roses in white and lilacs it matched with our theme beautifully, with matching buttonholes and a lovely little wand for my flower girl which she just adored! The table candelabras were also adorned with roses and foliage, a perfect final touch to our décor” Nicola.

Thank you Susan, our wedding flowers were stunning.. I didn’t get to see you on the day but I want you to know that I was delighted with them and I got so many compliments about them. You really listened to what I wanted during the first consultation and made recommendations about different flowers. I had such confidence that they were going to be spectacular but they were even better than I had imagined. Thank you! Kerry.

I cannot begin to express what an incredible talent Susan has! Our wedding was a little unconventional, involving a lot of pumpkins and flowers, and I knew our wedding florist would be the one to help us create the atmosphere we were looking for. Susan absolutely pulled it out the bag, including making the most beautiful flower crown for me – something which I will always treasure. Susan helped to make our wedding look like a fairytale. She was affordable, went above and beyond and made our wedding planning an absolute dream. Our guests literally “wowed”. Cannot recommend enough. Laura

Susan did my wedding flowers in September this year and they were absolutely stunning! I had so many compliments on them. From the initial meeting with Susan I knew I had made the right decision. She was so welcoming and accommodating and full of knowledge! Her portfolio was outstanding. Would recommend Narcissus Wedding Flowers to anyone if you were thinking about booking them! You won’t regret it. Thanks again, Nicola.

Could not recommend her enough. It wasn’t a small task to take on with fairly short notice. The flowers were better than I could have ever imagined. Thank you so so much xx Sinead

Susan was just lovely, from our first correspondence through email to finally meeting in person. I sometimes emailed her various times throughout the same day and nothing was too much trouble. I had no idea about flowers so she guided me through it all from the word go. My flowers were just beautiful and worked so well. I had various other bits that she did for me and as I say nothing was too much trouble and she was more than happy to guide me in the right direction. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Susan. My flowers and everything else that she did were no less than perfect so a huge thank you. Becca

Susan was fantastic, she knew what I wanted straight away and I got the flowers ordered up very quickly.
